On October 1-2, the fourth retreat seminar of the Society of Field Linguists took place, organized jointly by the staff of the Linguistic Convergence Laboratory and the Institute for Linguistic Studies (RSA).

From February 4 to March 20, the School of Linguistics hosted a series of lectures on the foundations of language evolution. The course was read by Damian Blasi, the member of Linguistic Convergence Laboratory, an author and co-author of works on fundamental problems in creole linguistics, linguistic symbolism and the history of linguistic diversity. In his lectures Damian Blasi considered both the main aspects of the theory of the language evolution, as well as more narrow topics, such as the structure of animal communication systems and their differences from human language, the time of the speech appearance in humans, biological and genetic foundations of language ability, multilingualism, and models of linguistic evolution.

The 2nd HSE Semantics and Pragmatics Workshop
The 2nd HSE Semantics and Pragmatics Workshop was held on 4-5th September 2018, two years after the 1st HSE SemPrag Workshop. International Laboratory for Logic, Linguistic and Formal Philosophy was the organizer of the conference. Among the subjects of the conference were logical, linguistical and philosophical analysis of the problems of semantics and pragmatics of natural language.

Anastasia Bonch-Osmolovskaya Discusses Tolstoy.Digital at Lausanne Workshop

On November 23-25 a research seminar on literary studies ‘Etats des Etudes Litteraires: Theories, Methodologies, Pratiques’ was held in Lausanne, Switzerland. Anastasiya Bonch-Osmolovskaya, Associate Professor at the School of Linguistics presented a report on Tolstoy.Digital – a project dedicated to producing a digital edition of the complete works by Leo Tolstoy.

Today computer and corpora technologies play an important role in language studies and language learning along with traditional methods of analysis. New corpora resources and software for language analysis are regularly developed. Experts from Russia, CIS and other countries discussed the latest achievements in this field at the international conference ‘Corpus Technologies, Digital Humanities and Modern Research’.

The International Conference on Language Variation in Europe took place from May 27 – 29, 2015, in Leipzig, Germany. Anastasia shared her impressions of the event.
