The course will focus on Chukchi (<Chukotko-Kamchatkan), a North-Eastern Siberian language. Some features of Chukchi, such as polysynthetic morphology (exemplified by polypersonal indexation and productive noun incorporation) and ergativity have already received substantial typological attention. During the course we are going to give a brief overview of the morphosyntax of Chukchi and its Chukotko-Kamchatkan relatives. Then we are going to present some case studies from Chukchi grammar based on data from our fieldwork. The course will describe Chukchi phonetics and phonology, which exhibit remarkable typological rarities as well as internal variation (lateral obstruent, velar approximant, inventory structure). One lecture will be devoted to different means to introduce lexical material into verbal complex in Chukchi (such as verb, adverb and noun incorporation, as well as lexical affixation and denominal verb formation). As for inflectional complexity, we will present an extensive study of Chukotko-Kamchatkan inverse systems. Finally, we are going to discuss (non)configurationality of Chukchi noun phrases - the topic, which has received relatively little attention previously.
